WiMAX Development in Asia November 17-23

- Thailand's ICT (Information and Communications Technology) Ministry plans to propose a merger of the NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) and NBC (National Broadcasting Commission) for the allocation and issuance of WiMAX and 3G mobile network operating licenses, as dictated by Thailand's Frequency Allocation Act, Bangkok Post reported on November 17. The ICT minister expects that the plan will be submitted to the Parliament in January 2009 and licenses will be allocated by mid-2009. According to the Bangkok Post report, WiMAX in Thailand is expected to operate in the 2.5GHz and 2.6GHz bands.

- Taiwan's Tatung InfoComm has obtained an operating license from the NCC (National Communications Commission) and plans to start offering WiMAX services in Penghu County by the end of the first quarter of 2009, Taiwan's Economic Daily News reported on November 19. It is projected that Tatung's WiMAX subscribers will be charged a monthly fee of under NT$1,000 (US$29.95; US$1=NT$33.39). In addition, Tatung expects to start WiMAX services in Kaohsiung City in June or July 2009 and expand its services to Kaohsiung County, Pingtung County, and Hualien County in the second half of 2009.

- Korea's POSDATA has entered into a mobile WiMAX equipment supply agreement with ARNA of Kazakhstan, thereby expanding its foothold in Central Asia from Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan, according to a press release by POSDATA. As per the agreement, POSDATA will provide the Kazakhstani WiMAX operator with 100 Wave 2 RAS (Radio Access Stations), ACR (Access Control Routers), NMS (Network Management System) and terminals. Earlier in June 2008, POSDATA was selected by Super-iMAX of Uzbekistan to help deploy a mobile WiMAX network in Uzbekistan.
